VICON CERTIFIED FOR COMPLETELY LEAD-FREE HARDWARE

1 Octoberr 2006, Oxford UK. Vicon announced today it has been awarded certification for completely lead-free, RoHS compliant hardware. As of July 1 all products sold in to the EU market must pass RoHS compliancy.

Testing was carried out on the new MX+ hardware range by Soldertec Global to determine if lead was present. Soldertec Global is a leading authority on the implementation of lead-free soldering technology and specializes in testing of components and materials for compliance with the RoHS Directive.

RoHS, also known as Lead-Free, stands for Restriction of Hazardous Substances. RoHS Directive 2002/95/EC restricts the use of six hazardous materials found in electrical and electronic products. RoHS impacts the entire electronics industry. The restricted materials are hazardous to the environment, pollute landfills, and are dangerous in terms of occupational exposure during manufacturing and recycling.

The RoHS directive came into force across the European Union on 1 July 2006 with China and Japan both also launching their own versions of the directive. Additionally, Australia, Canada, Korea and Taiwan are all adopting the EU directive and a similar Electronic Waste Recycling Act goes into effect in California, USA on January 1, 2007.

Nick Bolton, Chief Executive commented, “Vicon has always led through innovation and receiving our lead-free certificate demonstrates this. Vicon is the first in our industry to re-design our hardware so that the circuitry is now completely lead-free.”
