INTERNET SENSATION ‘GREG MUTT’ CREATED WITH VICON MOTION CAPTURE
June 18 2010, Oxford, UK: Vicon, developer of motion capture products for the Entertainment, Life Science and Engineering industries, today announced that YouTube sensation Greg Mutt was created using Vicon motion capture technology. Greg is an animated character, well known for his comedy review of the film Avatar, on YouTube.
The full service motion capture studio, Audiomotion, teamed up with animation specialists Busty Kelp, to create the YouTube character. Greg Mutt was originally designed to showcase the skills and ability of the two studios, using a spin off character from the hugely popular Avatar.
Greg’s ‘Blue hippy cats my avatar review’ has had over 210,000 views on YouTube since it was posted in February earlier this year. His success within the animation industry encouraged rumors to spread about who had created the much loved character.
Vicon motion capture technology played a huge role in the process. Paul Smith, Managing Director at Busty Kelp comments: “We captured the face and body mocap at the same time, with hardly any rework needed on the facial data. I wanted to see how much I could achieve with the motion capture, which meant hardly any of the data was keyframed.”
Mick Morris, Managing Director at Audiomotion explains how Greg became a reality, “We had a couple of day’s free in-between filming for a client. We were on location so thought it would be a good idea to make use of the time and a fully set-up performance capture stage.
“Paul suggested the idea of Greg to me and I thought it was brilliant. It’s been a massively exciting project to be involved with, and I’m so pleased that the animation has had such a great response from the industry!”
Imogen Moorhouse, Managing Director at Vicon congratulated the team. “Greg Mutt is a YouTube sensation and it’s thrilling to see such a positive response. Vicon is proud to have played a part in the creation of such a well loved character. I hope Paul and Mick continue to entertain us all with more installments from Greg in the future!”
