Extract - Correction of
spastic equinus deformity is a common surgical procedure in cerebral palsy.
Several surgical procedures are currently utilized for effectively lengthening
the Achilles tendon or gastrocnemius muscle. Past studies have examined the
effectiveness of these surgical procedures by preoperative and postoperative
assessment of traditional range of motion and muscle tests and observation of
gait. Recent advances in gait analysis technology now permit more objective
preop and postop assessment of a multitude of gait characteristics, including
joint motions, ground reaction forces, linear measurements, EMG firing patterns,
and other parameters. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects
of different methods of Tendo-Achilles Lengthenings done at the Shriners Hospitals
for Crippled Children in Houston, Texas by comparison of preop and postop gait
analysis measurements.
