Motion capture in engineering is simple in concept: you attach markers to something that moves, track those markers with cameras, and turn that movement into precise 3D data you can use to validate, tune, and automate. The value comes from what that data unlocks: faster iteration, clear information, and more confidence when your system has to perform in the real world.

1) Types of motion capture used in engineering
Optical-passive
Optical-passive systems use cameras with strobes to illuminate reflective markers. The cameras detect the 2D centroid positions of markers, and software reconstructs those into 3D marker positions inside your capture volume.
What it captures: the position of markers attached to an object as it moves through the 3D volume.
Why teams choose it
- High precision tracking with small, low-cost markers that are easy to replace
- No power is needed at the marker, so mounting is lightweight and doesn’t hinder movement
- Works in small or large spaces, and can be used indoors or outdoors with the right setup
What to watch for
- Passive markers have no ID, so labeling is handled by software algorithms
- Markers must stay securely mounted throughout the capture
- More sensitivity to environmental factors like unwanted reflections
Optical-active
Optical-active replaces reflective markers with electronic light sources, typically infrared LEDs. Some are synchronized, some have embedded labeling, and sequenced systems can make labeling errors far less likely.
What it captures: the position of active markers attached to an object as it moves through the 3D volume, just like passive, but with markers emitting their own light.
Why teams choose it
- Greater viewing distance because the marker is its own light source, helpful for larger environments
- In sequenced systems, only one marker is visible per frame, which makes mislabeling near impossible
- Each marker can be uniquely identified, which helps with multiple drones or complex maneuvers
- Easier detection in cluttered, low-light, dynamic, or outdoor environments, and with cameras that have no strobe
What to watch for
- Higher marker cost
- Active markers aren’t typically spherical, so they may not be visible from every angle
- Markers need power (wires and power pack, or internal battery)
- Extra marker weight means you need to be more careful about mounting and its impact on motion
2) System specifications that matter early
If you’re comparing systems, it helps to focus on a few fundamentals that directly affect data quality and how easily you can scale.
Tracking volume and environment
Your capture volume is the 3D space where cameras can reliably track objects, and it’s often smaller than the room because equipment sits around the perimeter. The size of your lab influences camera placement and the resolution you’ll need. Environment matters too. Outdoor setups can enable larger volumes but may require larger markers and/or camera capability that can handle the conditions.
Resolution
Higher-resolution cameras can calculate marker centroids more precisely at the same distance, and track the same marker size at a greater distance. Lower resolution can increase error because there are fewer pixels to compute a centroid.
If you need a larger volume, longer camera-to-subject distances, or smaller markers, resolution becomes more important.
Marker size
Marker size depends on what you’re tracking and how the cameras are configured. For smaller drones and robots, markers are often 3–6 mm. For general-purpose robotics, 9–14 mm can balance visibility and weight. For larger robots or autonomous vehicles, you typically want the largest marker that won’t be occluded or affect movement. Marker choice also ties back to camera resolution.
Frame rate
Frame rate is how many frames of data you capture per second (FPS/Hz). Faster motion needs higher frame rate to avoid dropout and maintain fidelity. In engineering-grade systems used for robotics, 120 FPS is often sufficient for standard locomotion and mechanical articulation, but high-speed maneuvers (rapid arm swings, drone flips, precision interactions) may demand 240 FPS or more.
The shorter the interaction time between tracked objects (think collision testing), the more frame rate matters.
3) Why use motion capture in engineering?
Engineering teams use motion capture because its core hallmarks line up perfectly with what engineering workflows demand: measurable accuracy, repeatability, and real-time data you can feed straight into analysis and control. You’re not guessing from video or inferring motion from noisy sensors, you’re capturing true 3D movement with known precision, frame by frame, inside a defined volume.
